Helen Loder SSM
Helen officially retired in 2010 and, as such, is no longer on the diocesan register of clergy at St Matthew's. However, she still worships with us and, from to time, takes her place at the altar and preaches. Because of her valuable contribution, we keep her name on the notice boards and on this website. She grew up in Brighton and showed one of her many rebellious signs by joining the Society of St Margaret in 1968, the Summer of Love. She had trained and worked as a teacher before joining the community at St Saviour's Priory in Haggerston. She has worked in a number of parishes in the East End as a parish sister. The community, one of the few Anglican orders to allow members to abandon the habit, has been to the forefront of liturgical and social change. Helen was one of the first women from a religious community to be ordained in 1994 and has written on the impact of this. She served her curacy in St Michael's London Fields. She is serving her third term as leader of the community.
